meeting Dad in hospital - healing with laughter, not medicine

Created by Sarah 5 years ago

A story from a great friend of Dad's, Pete Seward, on his meeting with Dad in a hospital ward, several years ago:

"Sarah, we are thinking of your family at this sad time, but please remember no-one can take away your memories of your great Dad. [...]  We should like to remember him re hsi funny phone calls and equally funny letters.

[...] One night Colin and I were talking in our twilight zone, and I noticed Arthur was out of bed, standing at the end and having a 'senior moment'.  At this point, I called out to Colin and said, 'Col, Arthur's pyjamas are standing up by themselves at the end of the bed'.  At this point your Dad shot under his sheets with hooting laughter, with his bed shaking and vibrating.  Your Dad's laughter got louder, the bed was moving about more and we both had a fit of the giggles for about 5 minutes until the Matron came and told us off for disrupting her ward next door.  We then went on to devise ways of escaping SGH to get away from Matron as she marked our cards.

When your Mum Paula came to visit your Dad, she always came to see me first and have a chat to cheer me up as I was laid out flat and told not to move.  I will always remember your Dad's chuckle/hoot.  We were both very down at the time, not knowing what the future held for us, but we both helped one another to recovery with laughter and not medicine. [...]

We will miss you Colin, friend, buddy, rest in peace.  Bye, with love.  Pete and Joan.
